Jadav Payeng – The man, Who planted a forest

In 1979, a 16-year-old boy named Jadav Payeng from Assam, India, saw snakes dying on a barren sandbar because there was no shade or trees. It broke his heart.

Instead of waiting for the government or anyone else, he started planting bamboo seedlings—alone. Day after day, year after year, he kept planting. People laughed at him, calling him crazy, but he didn’t stop.

After more than 40 years of dedication, his small effort turned into something unimaginable: a 1,360-acre forest (bigger than New York’s Central Park), now home to tigers, elephants, deer, birds, and thousands of species.

Jadav Payeng is now known as the “Forest Man of India.”
